Hello all, I thought we might have some fun here but only if you are a true blue old school Nintendo fan.
I am said old school Nintendo fan and have played more of these old Nintendo games than you have ever even heard of. So, it may well be that no one attempts to answer this question. If so, bah-nothing new to me. But, maybe, just maybe, some of you are closet old school Nintendo collectors like I am. If this is the case, then let the listing begin!
Here's the deal. Let's make a list of our favorite 8 bit Nintendo games-in descending order. That is to say 5, 4, 3, 2, and then 1 which will be your most favorite 8 bit or NES game. Its the first successful home console that Nintendo made, okay?
It would be great if you write a very short reason why you chose each game but you don't have to. Its just that merely listing games is somewhat boring, is it not?
Okay then. Here's my list, in descending order, with rationale as well:
_____________________________________________________________
5) Bad Dudes ( Data East )
What its about
--------------------
The president has been kidnapped by ninjas -- Bad Dudes for NES asks if you are a bad enough dude to rescue him. Players have the choice of playing as Blide or Striker and dispose of countless bad guys in this side-scrolling shooter. The game is also known as Dragon Ninja in Japan but is best remembered for the countless memes it spawned which involve changing the text represented on the start-up screen or the famous end screen, where the president states: "Hey dudes, thanks for rescuing me. Let's go for a burger.... HA HA HA HA!"
Why I like it so much
-----------------------------
This game was somewhat ahead of its time because it had some actual voice synthesis although it was almost unrecognizable. What made this game so fun was the constant flow of bad guys that you had to defeat. This game did not do what most games did of its time which was to present the player with some completely ridiculous boss that was nearly impossible to defeat. The bad guys in this game escalated appropriately in their difficulty level as you played the game. It was just pure and simple fun with decent graphics.
4) Castlevania ( Konami )
What its about
-------------------
Castlevania puts players in control of Simon Belmont as he travels through Count Dracula's castle, which emerges every 100 years. Simon battles numerous bosses along his way, including Frankenstein's monster, Igor, the Mummy Man, the Phantom Bat, Queen Medusa, the Grim Reaper, and Count Dracula himself. Simon encounters Dracula in his lair and defeats him.
Why I like it so much
---------------------------
Castlevania was just about the only game that could compete with Super Mario Bros. You controlled your character (Simon) and used a variety of acquired weapons like whips and axes to defeat legions of monsters protecting their master-Dracula. It wasn't an overly long game, but it was one that you could gain better mastery over the more times you played it. It was also highly re-playable and still is today. For me, it was fun to try and figure out the best way to defeat each of the tougher and tougher bosses that you face along the way.
3) Metal Gear ( Ultra )
What its about
------------------
Near the end of the 20th century, the West discovers that a weapon of mass destruction is being constructed inside Outer Heaven, a fortified state founded by a "legendary mercenary" 200 km north of Galzburg, South Africa. The special forces unit FOXHOUND sends top agent Gray Fox to infiltrate the fortress, assess the situation and neutralize the threat. FOXHOUND loses contact with Gray Fox a few days later, with his last transmission being "METAL GEAR..." To discover what happened to Gray Fox, FOXHOUND commander Big Boss sends his newest recruit, Solid Snake, into the area in an operation codenamed Intrude N313.
Why I like it so much
----------------------------
Metal Gear was an early complex 8 bit game. It actually required some problem-solving abilities, but nothing too difficult. The story behind this game was far ahead of the other games of its time too. For me, I liked the different bosses and trying to figure out how to defeat them. Also, there was a whole mystery thing going on through out the entire game that I won't spoil for you if you have never played it before. With this game, the developers really tried to make the most of the available graphics of the time and did a good job of it as well.
2) Metroid ( Nintendo )
What its about
-------------------
Set on the planet Zebes, the story follows Samus Aran as she attempts to retrieve the parasitic Metroid organisms that were stolen by Space Pirates, who plan to replicate the Metroids by exposing them to beta rays and then use them as biological weapons to destroy Samus and all who oppose them.
Why I like it so much
---------------------------
This game, while still 8 bit, is great because it is highly re-playable and can't really be played the same way twice. The game is based upon Samus (you) acquiring more and better items to aid you on your quest. Also, this game is an early long-playing game that one can get into and play for quite awhile if one chooses to do so. All this in an 8 bit package. It is one of the very best, in my opinion, of all systems.
1) Super Mario Bros. 3 ( Nintendo )
What its about
-------------------
Are you kidding me? Okay, here's the story. The Mushroom World, the setting of the game, is invaded by the Koopalings, Bowser's seven children. The Koopalings conquer each of the seven kingdoms by stealing its king's magical wand and using it to transform him into an animal. Princess Toadstool sends Mario and Luigi to travel to each kingdom, retrieve the stolen wand, and restore its king to normal.
Why I said it was No. 1
------------------------------
Well, let's see here. I have played this game probably hundreds of times and I am still playing it today. It is the ultimate 8 bit game, and I think even the ultimate of all games. Why? You never get tired of playing it and you will continue to discover new things within the courses as you play it over and over. You acquire a wide variety of power-ups through out the game which allow you to often times, depending upon your skill level, play through the game as an expert or a novice. There are many hidden things to find, warps and much more that sets this game apart from the others. If you have not ever played this game, then you are really missing out. You can get this game through the Nintendo E Shop. Its only like 5 dollars, but the best 5 dollars you will ever spend when it comes to 8 bit games.
There it is! My top 5 8 bits video games list. I certainly do hope that a few more people list their top 5 8 bits games. You don't have to do all this work that I did though. It would be cool if you did, but a list is okay.
You can use this link as a handy reference guide for looking through all the old 8 bit games if you want to. It makes it easier!
